Project: Spotswood Urban Design Analysis
-
Location:
-
Client: Hobsons Bay City Council
Project Description
As one of Melbourne’s oldest industrial suburbs Spotswood is central to some significant transforming and emerging projects including the West Gate Tunnel and Australia’s largest urban renewal project at Fishermans Bend. These influences together with projected changes in population, demographics and employment drivers will see the role of the suburb change over time.
In response to these factors, the report identifies potential issues and recommends a strategy for enhancing the functionality, attractiveness and sustainability of Spotswood while recognising its importance as the ‘gateway’ to greater Melbourne from the inner city. The five objectives of the report indicate the ambitions for Spotswood over the next 20 years and form part of the overall vision to create a vibrant, safe and sustainable place to live work and visit. These include; Spotswood as a River Town, Spotswood as an employment and creative knowledge precinct, Spotswood as a climate-resilient green city, Spotswood as an integrated and accessible local neighbourhood and Stability and change within Spotswood.
