Project Description

The strategic advice MGS provides to educational institutes and local and state government is underpinned by a research-centred approach within the office. Over many years the office has been a partner in Australian Research Council funded Linkage Grants, which bring together university academics with industry partners to exchange the most up-to-date research ideas and to develop new areas of investigation. Our studio has active teaching and research links with RMIT and the University of Melbourne and our people have published extensively in academic and professional journals.

We have visited over a hundred university campuses in the past ten years, meeting with provosts, university architects, facility directors, development directors, regional governments and architects to understand how projects have been initiated and developed and the lessons learned. Investigating the idea of a ‘UniverCity’ we are exploring the campus that is noticeably enmeshed within community, health, commercial, retail and residential uses. A well-functioning University City is one where the city engages with the campus and the campus engages with the city and its community.
