Project Description

Commissioned by the City of Boroondara, the new facility is home to the Balwyn Park Tennis Club, Balwyn Tigers Football Club, University of the Third Age and other community interest groups.

Mediating the steep terrain between the footy oval and tennis courts, the building offers a ‘front door’ at each level, opening out to a thoughtful landscape designed by Outlines.

The facility combines many varied uses in its small footprint: clubroom, multipurpose teaching and learning spaces, a commercial kitchen, offices, incidental meeting places and the all-important trophy and display cabinets.

Below the athletic roof form, muscular and poised, the textured brick walls are punctuated with ample windows, lending views inward and outward toward the unfolding match.

Inside, circulation revolves around a central stair, articulated with seating and a court-inspired enclosure. Although brick is the hero, interiors are announced with a splash of colour, reminiscent of red leather and fresh turf.
